The White House disclosed the start of federal worker terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official process for letting employees go.

While the official did not specify which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson noted that staff reductions would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Labor representatives warned that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and vowed to contest the moves in court.

This is shameful that the administration has used the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide critical services to the public across the country,” said Everett Kelley, representing the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Funding Battle

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to vote for a GOP-supported legislation to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended soon.

These terminations took place on the same day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck for the final days of the previous month but excluding the start of October, since appropriations expired at the start of the month.

Max Stier, the head of the advocacy group, criticized the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.

“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our government running,” Stier stated. The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
