Toronto Blue Jays Secure Fall Classic Matchup With defending champion Dodgers
The outfielder was instrumental for the Houston Astros winning the World Series in the 2017 season.
Canada's MLB team earned a spot in their maiden Fall Classic after the 1993 season by overcoming the Seattle Mariners in the decisive Game 7 of the ALCS.
Trailing three runs to one, Springer hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning, guiding the only Canadian franchise in Major League Baseball to a four games to three victory in the seven-game series. They will now face the defending champions, the team that is the defending champions, in the forthcoming championship.
"I'm just so happy for everyone here, the city, Canada," said Springer, a key player of the Astros team that claimed the 2017 World Series. "This is such an incredible feeling."
Springer has now connected for 23 total post-season home runs, making him third all-time behind Ramirez (twenty-nine) and Altuve (27).
"There's probably not another player anywhere that I'd choose in that situation except for George Springer with his post-season brilliance," noted Blue Jays manager John Schneider.
Seattle's team, who had led the series 2-0 and 3-2, are still the only MLB franchise that has never reached in a Fall Classic.
Manager Dan Wilson said "there's no question that it's going to sting" following his side's defeat at their home ballpark, but applauded their work this season.
"They're an exceptional squad. It's a shame that we finished on the wrong side of this one," he continued.
The Blue Jays secured the World Series on both previous visits in 1992 and 1993, and will welcome the Los Angeles in the opener on Friday.
