The Showrunner Discloses He Knows How His Sci-Fi Series Might Finish... Currently.
The creative mastermind did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would become a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “It was unexpected the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
As the debut season of the popular series coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room recently discussed the fan response and whether it will influence the future direction of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Fan Response
Anyone might to get distracted by the constant speculation and online debates regarding Pluribus. The creator is striving to avoid both.
“It feels like constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be living in squalor from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no way to avoid the extremely enthusiastic response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“It is not our goal to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Will Vince Gilligan Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren’t being guided by public opinion, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… with some caveats.
“There are some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” he states. “but we are always ready to discard a good idea for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We change course when we get a better idea and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
On the other hand, if they hit a wall, director and writer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to serve as a last resort.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll pull back at the end and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Of course, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.
Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV.
