The Legendary Jimmy Cliff, Reggae Superstar and Cultural Figure, Passes Away at 81 Years of Age

Global audiences grieves the loss of the iconic Jimmy Cliff, the renowned Jamaican reggae singer and performer whose distinctive vocal talent played a key role in spreading the reggae genre worldwide. He has died at the age of 81.

“It’s with profound sadness that I announce that my beloved husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” wrote his wife Latifa Chambers on social media. “I am thankful for his loved ones, close friends, fellow artists and colleagues who shared his journey. To all his fans globally, please know that your support was his motivation during his whole career … Jimmy, my dear, may you rest peacefully. I will follow your wishes.” The message was also signed by their children, Lilty and Aken.

Cliff was beloved for hit songs including “You Can Get It If You Really Want”, “I Can See Clearly Now” and “Wonderful World, Beautiful People”. His upbeat sound and positive spirit brought him a large and longstanding following.

In addition to his musical achievements, Cliff starred in the 1972 crime drama The Harder They Come, a performance that received critical praise and is viewed as a cornerstone of Jamaican cinema.

He was among the select few of artists, including the legendary Bob Marley and other greats, to be awarded the prestigious Jamaican Order of Merit.
