The Game UN:Me: A Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo adventure appears to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a girl containing several personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Within her exist four distinct personas, all possessing their own anxieties and drives. These entities can seize control spontaneously, releasing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, while additional clips depict the main character exploring a desolate church.
An Environment of Individual Dread
"What are you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. Authority figures. Elements that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and attack the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking visual similarities with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide grins. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their heads should be. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular mechanic. Players are tasked with deducing which of the four souls inhabiting the heroine is the "true" one. "Each of the personas claims that the body belongs to them," explains a creator. "Throughout the game, you must determine who is authentic."
Once players have deduced a soul is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is available to follow on platforms.
