Food Benefits Scheduled to Cease for Tens of Millions During Ongoing Federal Shutdown
Federal agriculture authorities stated recently that SNAP funds from a major federal support systems will not be distributed during the coming month because of the continuing federal closure.
Impasse Persists For Nearly Four Weeks
The federal closure was in its 25th day as officials revealed the news, in response to appeals by more than two hundred Democratic representatives pushing the USDA to access emergency reserves to cover November's food assistance.
“Bottom line, funds are depleted,” the USDA stated. “At this time, assistance will not be provided” on 1 November.
National Consequences
Tens of millions of people depend on these monthly payments, according to official statistics. In certain states, including New Mexico, use of SNAP is as high as 21% of residents.
Internal communications seen by Reuters showed that federal authorities chose not to tap reserve funds to cover next month's assistance.
Political Stalemate
Republicans and Democrats remain deadlocked regarding how to finance and restart government operations.
Remarks from the head of a budget research center indicated that federal leadership could have acted to act sooner to prevent benefits from running out.
“It could have, and should have acted weeks ago to make arrangements to access these resources,” the statement continued. “Conversely, officials could opt out in an effort to gain political advantage” as Republicans seek to influence Democratic senators to approve legislation that would resume the federal government.
Emergency Measures
Governors in two affected states activated emergency protocols recently to make money available to address food insecurity preparing for nutrition assistance payments stopping next month.
