Donald Trump’s newest warning to impose an extra full import duty on Chinese goods has been described as a “classic case” of American hypocrisy, per the Chinese government.

A representative of the ministry further commented that the nation could enact its own unspecified “responsive actions” if the US President executes his pledge, noting that the country was “fearless” of a possible trade war.

On Friday, Donald Trump responded at Beijing’s move to strengthen its policies for exports of rare earths, accusing Beijing of “becoming very hostile” and attempting to hold the world “hostage”.

Furthermore, he warned to withdraw from a arranged talks with Beijing’s head of state President Xi, which was set for a conference in Seoul later this month.

Trump’s comments on Friday rattled global markets, with the S&P 500 share index closing down over two and a half percent, marking its biggest drop since last spring.

His comments revived concerns of a commercial dispute between the US and China.

In May, the two sides had reached an agreement to eliminate triple-digit tariffs on each other’s goods, which had led to concerns of bilateral trade stopping between the two nations.

Consequently, US tariffs on Chinese goods subject to an additional thirty percent tariff compared with the beginning of 2025, while items from the United States entering China incur a 10% tariff.

Beijing’s recent statements – released by the Commerce Ministry in the form of written responses to media inquiries – mirrored language from the height of the ongoing trade dispute.

They criticised United States controls on chips and semi-conductors while justifying the country’s own overseas sale regulations on rare earth minerals as “normal actions” to safeguard domestic safety and that of all nations.

The official said that for “many years”, the United States had “expanded the interpretation” of domestic safety, exploited overseas sale restrictions and “implemented” biased policies against Beijing.

“Using” tariff threats is not the proper method to interact with Beijing,” the official commented.

“Beijing’s stance” on a trade conflict has remained steady: we are not seeking one, but we are unafraid of one.”

Recently, the Chinese government revealed it was reinforcing foreign shipment restrictions on rare earth minerals and further resources critical for high-technology production.

This move was regarded as a important measure, as the state processes about ninety percent of the world’s rare earths, which are used in items such as renewable energy components and smartphones.

New remarks from the US and China are being seen by observers as a strategy of strengthening positions in preparation for forthcoming discussions.

Remains uncertain whether a summit between Donald Trump and China’s leader, expected at a summit in South Korea later this month, will go ahead.
