The nation’s food safety authority stated it aims to initiate a total removal of numerous ostriches at a ranch following the supreme court refused to halt the contentious cull.

Legal Impediments Cleared by Court Ruling

Thursday’s ruling eliminated any legal impediment to commencing the killings.

Universal Ostrich Farms, situated near the community of Edgewood, was initially directed in May to cull almost four hundred birds, amid fears of an outbreak of avian influenza.

Earlier this week, authorities took over of the operation.

Nearly seventy birds have already died after the outbreak of a flu-like illness.

On Wednesday, Canada’s supreme court granted an interim stay on the eradication directive as it weighed whether to hear the case.

Political and Societal Responses

The increasing controversy over the ostriches – and a simmering distrust of government – have inspired protesters to descend on the farm, with many broadcasting their frustration on social media.

The case has also entered the nation’s political sphere.

Earlier this fall, the Conservative leader, the Tory leader, was questioned twice by journalists whether he supported the demonstrators.

The Conservative figure has steered clear of making direct statements on the matter, even though many within his party protesting against the slaughter.

He told reporters the situation had been “mismanaged from the very beginning” but didn’t say the word “ostrich”.

Cross-Border Interest and Proposals

A number of prominent figures from the United States have petitioned authorities in Canada.

The US health secretary offered to move the ostriches to his ranch in the Sunshine State.

An American billionaire has also appealed with the Canadian government to rescind its cull order.

Health and Ethical Arguments

The Canadian federal government stated the relevant agency was following a eradication approach in order to limit the spread of avian flu, a step in line with broader advice from international health bodies.

However, animal advocacy groups have urged the authority to perform further testing on the animals to confirm they are carrying the virus.

The farm owners claimed that because the last bird flu death happened on 15 January 2025, with the remaining birds seeming in good condition or recovered, the group has acquired at least partial herd immunity against H5N1.

They have also cast doubt on the scope and reliability of the tests on the ostriches.

Farm Spokesperson Response

On Thursday, the ranch representative, informed the press that the agency was killing healthy birds.

“These are prehistoric animals that have survived eons, but they will not endure the government agency,” she stated.

A partner expressed he was concerned there’s – in my opinion – there’s no fairness left”.

Judicial and Authority Decisions

A federal court, on the other hand, found that allowing the birds to stay alive could result in the transmission of avian influenza to other animals, the poultry industry – or to people.

The agency has not said at what time it expects to begin culling the ostriches.

Eradication Procedures

A 2016 agency manual, acquired under public access laws, says ostriches can be euthanized by various methods, the preferred being injection, which requires multiple individuals: one person to restrain the ostrich by sitting on its back, another to secure the head, and a third to administer the injection.

Staff can also use gas chambers or break the birds’ necks.

Members of the agency can only shoot the ostriches in extreme circumstances, if they have a “skilled marksman” on the premises.

Latest Developments

As per media sources, shortly after the court ruling, inspection agents started installing more equipment and bright lights around a makeshift pen near the back of the ostrich pen.
