A Pair of Cuba-bound Humanitarian Ships Reported Lost after Departing Mexico.
A large-scale search and rescue operation is currently ongoing in the Caribbean region for two lost sailing vessels carrying relief goods en route from the Mexican coast to Cuba.
Maritime Rescue Missions Launched
The Mexican government has dispatched naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were transporting a minimum of nine crew members, according to a military release.
The boats had been projected to make landfall in Havana on either Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no official word of their arrival, the navy said.
Context of Relief to the Island
The Caribbean nation has depended significantly on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation grapples with multiple nationwide blackouts.
"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and each boat are outfitted with appropriate safety systems and signalling equipment," a spokesperson associated with the mission stated.
The nine-person crew are from Poland, France, Cuba and the US. Officials said it has established contact with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.
"Our team is co-operating fully with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the spokesperson added.
Recent Relief Mission
Earlier in the week, the government in Havana widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had delivered 14 tons of relief supplies to the country.
That vessel, nicknamed "a new Granma" following the name of the vessel in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to start the revolution in the 1950s, brought solar equipment, medicines, infant formula, bicycles and provisions.
Broader International Backdrop
Volunteers and NGOs have been at the forefront of attempts to deliver essential supplies to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a oil sanctions on the country was initiated.
International organizations have since warned of ""severe" supply shortages, with in excess of 50k operations postponed in Cuba due to energy rationing.
Foreign policy measures have intensified in recent months, with comments from different representatives highlighting the complicated state of bilateral relations.
Reacting to recent comments, a senior government figure insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."
Accounts suggest that initial phases of talks had begun, although their ongoing development remains uncertain.
The naval forces affirmed it was dedicated to using the full extent of its capabilities at its disposal to find the sailboats and guarantee the security of the crews.
As of now, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the Cuban leadership.
